CREATE! Utah

The Printing Industries of Utah is proud to announce a call for entries for CREATE! Utah, a juried competition open to all Utah printers and designers. We are excited to launch this premier event - the only one of its kind in Utah.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA & PROCEDURES

  • CREATE! Utah is open exclusively to Utah based printing companies, and designers
  • Students (9th grade - college) must be enrolled in a graphic arts program in Utah at the time the work was produced. The work must have been produced by the student (from native file through finished product) within the institution in which enrolled. 
  • The company entering the piece must have performed at least 50% of the printing and sold the job, or created the design, performed special treatment or bindery.
  • Entries must have been produced between January 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016 to be eligible.
  • You may submit as many entries as you like; however, no more than 10 pieces in any one category.
  • Once juried in, two hard copies of each piece entered in each category will need to be submitted. Further instructions will be included in your admittance email.  
  • The Printing Industries of Utah reserves the right to reject and disqualify any entry that, in its judgment, is vulgar, offensive, or not suitable for consideration or exhibit.

METHOD OF ENTRY

  1. Make sure your submission meets the eligibility criteria above.
  2. Before beginning registration, you will need two to three (2-3) high quality digital images for each entry. Include one view of the overall piece, and at least one more additional detail image or alternate view. 
  3. When ready to enter the competition, select "Register" (upper right of this screen) to create your user account. After establishing your user account, login with your email address and password.
  4. Follow the prompts to input your entry information for title, category, press type, designer (optional) and detailed production notes describing how the piece was made (bio, specialty inks, substrate, equipment, designer, soft wares, and any other pertinent information). Entries may be edited for length and clarity.
  5. Upload your high quality images. Size specifications will be displayed for your convenience. If your image does not meet the required specifications, the program will tell you immediately so that you can make adjustments. Once your image uploads, select "Done. Enter Submission" Repeat for additional entries. You will be able to access and make changes to your submissions up until the entry deadline (April 15, 2016 11:59 pm) To later edit your entry or entries, login again at CreateUtah.ArtCall.org.
  6. After all submission information is entered, you will be prompted to pay your submission fee using a credit card on this same secure site. You will be notified via email for each entry submitted. Payment data will not be retained. Contact PIU Administrator, KatieLane@PIofUtah.com, (801) 839-4321, if payment by check is your only option. (April 15, 2016 is the deadline for receiving check payments).   7. Each submission includes one ticket into the CREATE! Utah Awards Party on May 20, 2016. Additional tickets can be bought for $25


Warning! If you wish to change an entry, select "edit" option to change entry details. If you want to change the image, select the red trash can option under the image. Then upload new image. Do NOT delete the entire entry (trash can on the far right). To reenter deleted submission, you will be charged again. No entry fee refunds will be issued once payment is received.

Note: It is recommended to enter early to give yourself enough time to allow for unexpected issues. With this automated system, the submission deadline is absolute and not flexible. No changes to entry details can be made after the deadline.



NOTIFICATION

  • All submissions will be notified via email for each entry submitted.
  • All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of jurors in April 2016. All registered users will be notified via email of juried status no later than April 22, 2016 end of day.
  • Winners will be notified via email no later than May11, 2016.
  • Awards will be presented during the CREATE! Utah Awards Party on Friday, May 20, 2016 at Salt Lake Community College South City Campus - Center for New Media.
  • Entries will be displayed in the Hall of Winners at the CREATE! Utah Awards Party
  • All winners will be posted at www.PIofUtah.org



CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

Technical Printing Excellence:
  • Register, clarity and neatness of impressions
  • Sharpness of halftones, line drawings
  • Definition in material requiring detail
  • Attention to symmetry of margins, columns spacing, etc.
  • Richness and tonal qualities of color
  • Effective contrast or softness as required by design or purpose of piece
  • Quality of binding, stitching, punching, die-cutting, inserting, folding, etc.
  • Quality and effectiveness of paper stock or other printing surface
  • Overall visual impact
Quality of Art and Design:
  • Overall art composition
  • Typography
  • Flair, originality, creativity
  • Effective use of color
  • Construction and format
  • Clarity, readability
  • Unusual spacing, size, shape
  • Total visual impact
  • Effectiveness from an overall design standpoint


PRIZES

  • All winning pieces will receive a certificate suitable for framing, using the information provided on the entry form.
  • Honors will be awarded for "Best of Category" and "Best in Show" for each division: Professional and Student
  • Each "Best of Category" will have their winning piece automatically submitted into the international Printing Industries of America Premier Print Awards (free of charge). This prestigious international competition offers extensive promotional coverage for the winner.
  • "Best in Show" winners will be announced in news releases sent to national, regional, and local trade magazines and business publications. Selected local newspapers will also receive news releases relating to local award winners.
  • "Best in Show" Professional division will also receive a prestigious trophy for display.
  • ​​Two  (2) "Best in Show" Students division will receive a $500 scholarship to the Print and Design program of their choosing.
